Connection Is At the Heart of Healing
Meet Michelle Ertl - Trauma and Sex Therapist in the Denver Area
When you’re struggling, it can feel like you’re caught in overwhelming emotions and tangled thoughts. You may have been trying to figure it out alone because others don’t seem to understand and vulnerability feels scary. You’re looking for someone who listens with empathy, hears beyond words, and can gently illuminate a path toward understanding.
I believe that therapy is about a balance of acceptance and change. Acceptance can provide the foundation upon which meaningful change occurs. When we accept ourselves and our circumstances, we can validate our experiences while still moving forward toward a life worth living.
In therapy, I draw on my training in approaches that are backed by research. However, I also want to connect on a human level and believe that there is immense meaning that can come from being seen by another person. While I often work from a trauma-based perspective, I know that you are more than your past. Also - your life doesn’t just stop because you’re in therapy. We will work to understand the impact of your past while also applying insights and tools to improve your day-to-day experience.
With clients, I work to develop a strong relationship built through open communication, humor, and kindness. Clients find me to be easy going, approachable, and sincere in my care about their growth and progress. I love being a part of clients’ “aha” moments when they start to better understand and have compassion for themselves and I hope to be a part of yours.
When You Share With Someone Who Truly Understands, It’s Like Having a Mirror That Reflects the Real You
I’ve spent the majority of my career working with clients who have experienced trauma. That word “trauma” can mean a lot of different things. It can be one or two experiences that you just can’t move past. Or it could be that your foundational relationships didn’t provide you with the safety and support you needed to navigate the world. Trauma isn’t simply the events that happened to you, but the impact that they have inside of you. Most of the time, your reactions to these situations made perfect sense at the time - they even protected you. But now, they can leave you feeling stuck. Trauma isn’t just one thing, so treatment isn’t one size fits all either. I have received training in a variety of trauma-focused treatments, such as EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and more and work with you to figure out which approach makes the most sense for you.
I also recognize the importance of sexual health on our overall well-being. But having a satisfying sex life isn’t always so simple and sex is a topic that is often seen as taboo to talk about - even in therapy! As an AASECT certified sex therapist, I work to create a comfortable space where you can identify and work through things that are getting in the way and tap into what you didn’t even know was missing.
